MAKING A DIFFERENCE TOGETHER

Since 2016, Refugia has been steadily building a network of native habitats with the mission of restoring ecosystem function to our neighborhoods. With our municipal parks and preserves too small to sustain the species within them, it is up to us as homeowners to restore nature to our towns, cities and suburbs.

Our only home, Planet Earth, is facing two enormous environmental crises: climate change and the loss of biodiversity. Refugia’s ‘on the ground’ actions are addressing both crises simultaneously. Landscaping in ways that include rather than exclude nature outside of our parks and preserves is the future of conservation. The folks at Refugia not only understand this; they are leading the way in implementing such conservation.

Our Ecological Greenway Initiative

In developed regions such as ours, habitat fragmentation and insufficient stormwater management place significant burdens on surrounding ecosystems. Refugia's Greenway Network of 200+ native landscapes throughout PA, DE & NJ that work collectively as a system of stepping stones within larger ecological corridors, amplifying the overall effect a single property can have.

The ArcGIS web map below offers a visual representation of the scope of our ever-expanding Greenway Network. There are currently over 100 properties within a 5 mile radius of Narberth, PA. Neighboring parks and green spaces are shown in green. The blue buffer around each property represents the average foraging distance (400m) for native pollinators.

A town is saved, not more by the righteous men in it
than by the woods and swamps that surround it.
— Henry David Thoreau

Stepping stone gardens that promote habitat connectivity for plants and wildlife are a key element in neighborhood nature conservation, allowing species to intermingle and breed within protected habitat. Our long term goal is to not only restore species loss but over time, to reverse it - leading to enlarged and more resilient species populations better equipped to withstand normal population fluctuations for years to come.

WHERE DO I FIT IN?

Nature isn’t something we should have to travel to. It’s right outside our window if we only allow it to flourish. When you work with Refugia, know that you network with likeminded neighbors as concerned about conservation as you are. Collectively, our impact will make a difference. Talk to us about joining the Network today!

Working from home, I feel lucky to observe the difference our native perennials are making from my desk every day. Duelling catbirds love snacking on our dogwood berries, the bees are back and just this weekend we saw our first monarch butterfly grazing on the milkweed.
