RE·FU·GI·A 1950S: From Latin, literally ‘place of refuge.’
A geographical region that forms a haven for relict flora and fauna.
We design with the seasons in mind so that your landscape remains a refuge before, during and after flowering, offering depth, reward and solace whatever the time of year. The sensory details of color, texture and scale are designed specifically for your home's context, making our designs functional and rooted with a sense of place. From the lush naturalism of a summer meadow to a winter garden alive with subtle textures, a Refugia habitat is always inspiring.
At Refugia, we work with you to reclaim ground for both yourself and the environment. In our work, we strive to co-exist with, rather than compete with nature. That's why we landscape with native plants that promote sustainability, cultivate biodiversity, and nurture havens for wildlife.
We consider the design as the beginning, not the end, of our relationship with you. We work to get to know you so that we may deliver a landscape design that is layered with interest. We also offer expert maintenance to ensure the longevity and evolution of your garden to its fullest expression.
Refugia's team has over 20 years of landscape design/build experience in the greater Philadelphia area. Our credentials include degrees in horticulture, biology, and environmental science from Oberlin College, Antioch University, The Evergreen State College, and William & Mary, in addition to years of practical field experience. The members of our design team each have Masters of Landscape Architecture from Temple University, specializing in ecological restoration. Our on-site foreman is a PA certified Master Naturalist. Members of our land management team developed their skills in education and field work through their experiences with the US Forest & National Park Service, the Student Conservation Association, Agricultural Experiment Stations in NJ & NY, and also at the Schuylkill Center, located here in Philadelphia. We are also keen educators, winning a Silver Medal at the 2016 and 2017 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show for our innovative exhibits utilizing native plants. As a whole, our team makes a continued effort to research and develop the theories behind our practices through readings, conferences, and collaboration that constantly improve and evolve our work practices.
